1 - Paper
Celebrate your first anniversary, which is traditionally known as paper, at a luxury hotel such as The Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh. Take a walk past the magnificent former headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper, housed in a stunning old building which keeps its old character.

2 - Cotton
For your second anniversary you could step back in time to the beautifully restored cotton mill village at New Lanark Visitor Centre near the Falls of Clyde, under an hour from Glasgow. Now a World Heritage Site, this historic village offers a fascinating insight into life at the mill in the 19th and 20th century, including a tour of a workers’ houses, old shops, a schoolroom and the mill itself. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a stroll into the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve which is a haven for wildlife and features cascading waterfalls.

3 - Leather
Hire a classic car or join a bus tour and ride together through Scotland’s stunning scenery on one of the country’s National Tourist Routes. The Argyll Coastal Route takes in Loch Lomond, the well-known Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint and Oban, before winding up past the dramatic Glencoe and on the Fort William, Scotland’s adventure capital which is the UK’s highest mountain Ben Nevis.

Whisk your loved one away on a visit to one of Scotland’s gardens to enjoy a romantic amble together amongst beautiful floral displays. The country is home to four Royal Botanic Gardens, over 70 gardens run by the National Trust for Scotland, public gardens and privately opened gardens.

5 - Wood
Escape the hustle and bustle and make your fifth anniversary special by booking a stay in a traditional wooden lodge by a loch, in a forest or on an island. In Perthshire, which is also known as ‘Big Tree Country’, you can enjoy outdoor activities, such as cycling, walking and watersports and cosy up in the evening by a log fire.

6 - Sugar
Indulge your sweetheart with some tasty treats, such as Orkney fudge, fine shortbread and traditional sweets from the Scottish Borders. Maybe you’d like get stuck in and make some chocolates yourself, or go out for a meal and enjoy a Scottish desert, such as cranachan?

7 - Copper
This anniversary provides the perfect opportunity to find out about Scotland’s national drink, whisky, and the part that copper plays in the making it. Take a tour of a distillery to admire gleaming copper stills and enjoy tasting a dram or too at the end.

8 - Bronze
Discover craftsmanship from the Bronze Age at sites across Scotland, including Orkney, Shetland and the Highlands. At Jarlshof Prehistoric & Norse Settlement in Sumburgh, Shetland a Bronze Age village remains, including a smithy build around 800 years BC. It’s a truly humbling experience to visit places which were inhibited by people so long ago.

9 - Willow
Celebrate in style with a trip to Glasgow’s Willow Tea Rooms on your ninth anniversary. Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1903, the exquisite Tea Rooms welcomes those keen to experience the splendour of a bygone era.

10 - Tin
Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a trip to a museum such as the Museum of Childhood in Edinburgh or the Hamilton Toy Collection in Callander to spot some tin soldiers. Many local museums have displays of popular toys from the past which are fascinating to both young and old visitors.

15 - Crystal
Discover private collections of crystal, gem stones and rocks at museums including Creetown Gem Rock Museum in Newton Stewart and Treasures of The Earth in Fort William. At the National Museum of Scotland you could seek out the Calcite crystal in the Earth and Space gallery, which was found in Wanlockhead lead mine in Dumfries & Galloway, now a site of Special Scientific Interest because of its a rich mineral species.

20 - China
Situated in over 200 acres of magnificent parkland, The House of the Binns in Linlithgow is a 17th century property with a fascinating history which holds an equally unique collection of the finest china and porcelain for you to enjoy.

25 - Silver
Find out about Scotland’s thriving arts and crafts community and visit a workshop to see how silver jewellery is made. From modern Sheila Fleet pieces on the Orkney Arts and Crafts Trail, to Celtic designs at the Johnnie Armstrong Gallery near Hawick in the Scottish Borders, there are many skilled jewellers to choose from.

30 - Pearl

35 - Coral
Look out for coral on one of Skye’s undiscovered treasures – Claigan Coral Beach at the north west tip of the Dunvegan Peninsula. Visit in the evening when the setting sun lights over Loch Dunvegan for a truly magical anniversary celebration.

40 - Ruby
Show that your love is like a red, red rose as you celebrate 40 years together with a visit to Burns’ Country. Visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayrshire to find out about Scotland’s National Bard and see the cottage where he was born, the famous Brig O’Doon which featured in his well-known tale Tam O’ Shanter and soak up the romance of Alloway.

50 - Gold
