Enjoy this 5 day tour of Wales, combining golf and some of Wales's 641 castles! You will experience breathtaking scenery from the rugged landscape of the North, to Tenby and the small fishing villages on the south west coast combined with the modern cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city of Swansea in the South. Wales is great golfing country.
The Welsh landscape is crammed with castles – brooding stone reminders of the country's turbulent history. Essentially there are three types of castle in Wales: those built by the Normans, those by the Welsh, and those by Edward I. The native Welsh castles were built in some of the most dramatic places in the country, utilising craggy outcrops and steep, isolated hills as natural defences.

Start your tour at Rhuddlan Golf Club, where its par 71, 6482m parkland course was first established as a nine-holer in 1930 and extended to 18, eight years later. Rhuddlan Golf Club has undergone many more improvements since then and has recently won an award from the Forestry Commission for the planting of 5,000 trees. These have not only brought new definition to the fairways and greens, but provided wildlife corridors joining ponds and greens around the popular championship course.
After a challenging round of golf and lunch within sight of the beautiful Clwydian Range, make for Edward I’s Rhuddlan Castle a few minutes away. Constructed in 1277, it was the King’s main stronghold for his conquest of North Wales. The most prominent part of the castle is the West Gatehouse and it’s interesting to discover that Edward even went as far as diverting the River Clwyd to be able to deliver supplies to the castle from the sea. 3 miles south of Rhyl, off the A525. Overnight Bodelwyddan or St Asaph
Your first stop today is at Bodelwyddan Castle which has been carefully restored as a regional centre of the National Portrait Gallery specialising in Victorian portraits. With parts of the mansion dating back to the 15th century, this is one of the most popular attractions in North Wales complete with wonderful period rooms, immaculate furniture and assorted Victoriana. Bodelwyddan’s fine gardens are just as appealing with exotic plants and shrubs and a Victorian aviary stocked with popular 19th century bird species.
Gwydir Castle in Llanrwst is well worth a visit. Situated in the beautiful Conwy Valley and set within a Grade 1 listed 10-acre garden. Gwydir has also acquired a reputation for being one of Wales’ most haunted houses! Leave the north behind for the scenic afternoon drive to Harlech through Snowdonia National Park via Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog. Overnight Harlech or Portmeirion
Try your luck today on the Royal St David’s championship course at Harlech, overlooked by Edward I’s 13th century castle which looms high on the hill nearby. Since there are only a handful of holes that proceed in the same direction, the wind invariably causes trouble amongst the dunes. And, although the course here is not long, it has been described by professionals as ‘the world’s toughest par 69’. Find out more about Harlech Castle’s colourful history in the early afternoon before taking the drive south. Overnight Tenby, Narberth, Haverfordwest or Pembroke
The picturesque resort of Tenby is home to the oldest established golf course in Wales - a natural links course founded in 1888 featuring quality greens and some challenging approach shots. These include a 466 yard, par 4 opening hole for which you drive straight into the prevailing wind.
Enjoy the rest of your day discovering this charming, medieval walled town or drive to Pembroke to visit Pembroke Castle. Pembroke Castle is one of the most complete in Wales with many towers still intact and numerous atmospheric passages. Visit superb exhibition rooms which explain its remarkable past - and its brass rubbing centre. Overnight Tenby, Narberth, Haverfordwest or Pembroke
Today, your final golfing destination is the South Wales Valleys. Take your pick from any of six challenging golf courses at Rhondda, Aberdare, Glynneath, Mountain Ash, Morlais Castle or Mountain Lakes (Caerphilly). All of these courses provide a challenge for every level of ability - and you are assured of a warm 'Welsh Valleys’ welcome. And where else can you 'tee off' at a 1,000ft feet (300m) above sea level - and enjoy a combination of breathtaking panoramic views and industrial heritage? Overnight South Wales Valleys
