Inspiration to a raft of famous writers, Shaw, Joyce, Wilde and Yeats amongst them. Dublin is now a modern city, with tremendous energy and excitement about it. Great for shopping, great for pubs (and Guinness) and, of course, there's the craic.
The courses in the Dublin area are an interesting mixture of the old and the new. The most senior course is Royal Dublin, Co. Louth (Baltry) is a fine challenging links, in the traditional sense, and Portmarnock has seen more great events than any other on the Irish mainland, including hosting many Irish Opens, a tribute to a formidable test of golf.
The course at the Portmarnock Hotel also gives an interesting round, whilst there are some excellent new courses also claiming their share of the limelight - The European Club, Mount Juliet, Druid's Glen and the K Club.
Another great course is Killeen Castle, here is a little bit about the club. Located only 30mins from Dublin city centre, Killeen Castle Golf Club is home to a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Host of the Ladies Irish Open 2011-2013 and the 2011 Solheim Cup this world class golf course is a magnificent test of golf, showcasing modern golfing excellence in terms of design and presentation. Suitable for golfers of all abilities golfers will enjoy this expansive and challenging course.
Killeen Castle Golf Club can boast not only a glorious landscape and idyllic setting, but a golfing experience unlike any other. Killeen Castle Golf Club is a wonderful test of golf, and certainly one of Nicklaus' finest creations whilst also being voted regularly the Best Parkland Course in the greater Dublin area.
For the golfer, no overview of the great courses would be complete without mention of the mighty links at Ballybunion, where the Old course has brought well-served fame to this pleasant little seaside town. Also close at hand are Tralee (designed by Arnold Palmer) and the charming courses at Killarney, set amidst mountains and lakes, whilst Old Head at Kinsale is a new course rapidly gaining an excellent reputation.
