Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London
Admire tropical plants from across the globe, walk amid ancient treetops on an 18-metre-high walkway and explore 300 acres of riverside gardens at Kew in southwest London. This leafy UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a burgeoning array of plants, with towering exotic foliage filling spectacular glass houses, and landscaped grounds scattered with seasonal blooms, majestic trees, water features and pretty temples.
Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Kent
A network of neat hedges turns Sissinghurst Castle Garden into a collection of floral chambers, each with its own ambiance. In these miniature plots find rare plants, delicate countryside blooms and aromatic herbs. This orderly space was created in the 1930’s by the English poet and garden writer Vita Sackville-West, together with her husband, the politician and author Harold Nicolson.
Stowe Landscape Gardens
Lakeside monuments, ornate arches and intriguing temples punctuate Stowe’s far-reaching expanse of soft greenery. This revered garden has seen a notable collection of English names in landscape gardening make their mark, such as Capability Brown and William Kent. Take in the wide vistas stretched over sloping lawns, and roam the mature woodland and pristine grass of Brown’s Grecian Valley.
The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland
Alnwick, with its giant water feature and intriguing themed zones, is without doubt among England’s most visually exciting gardens. Weave through the Bamboo Labyrinth, inhale myriad sweet scents in the fragrant Rose Garden and discover dark and deadly species in the Poison Garden. Visit around April and May to see hundreds of Taihaku cherry trees cloaked in magnifi cent white blossom.
Garden Museum, London
Celebrating the heritage of the English garden is this compact museum a short stroll from the heart of central London. A selection of historical gardening tools are on display from the museum’s collection of nearly 10,000 pieces, and three temporary annual exhibitions span garden culture, design and history. Outside, the neat 17th-century-style knot garden is a pocket of green refreshment in the busy city.
Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire
Pristine Italianate design and delicate English foliage sit side by side at this Staffordshire garden. There’s plenty to entertain families, with a maze, barefoot walk, adventure playground and boat rides on the lake. Recent regeneration has seen the gardens flourish, and visitors can take inspiration for home from Show Gardens that include reconstructions of RHS Chelsea Flower Show favourites.
Eden Project, Cornwall
Emerald rainforest is thriving in southwest England thanks to the largest conservatory in the world. At the Eden Project in Cornwall find futuristic domes housing a wealth of global plant life. In the humid Tropical Biome see exotic plants such as banana trees, bamboo, coffee and rubber, while over in the dry Mediterranean Biome find
winding vines, summery blooms and heat-loving lemon trees.
Chelsea Flower Show, London
The Chelsea Flower Show’s innovative designs and new plant unveilings draw garden enthusiasts from far and wide to the grounds of London’s Royal Hospital Chelsea for five days in May. Join members of the British Royal Family in perusing the many creative garden entries, and see which one wins over the judges to be crowned the Best Show Garden.
