It’s Scotland’s answer to America’s Route 66 and one of the top coastal road trips on the planet; the famous North Coast 500. Starting in the beautiful city of Inverness, this route travels through the Highlands and across the northern Scottish coastline, taking in many dramatic landscapes along the way.
Planning the route
Departing from Inverness, travellers can head west via Applecross and then head north to Ullapool and Torridon. Taking in Caithness, John o’ Groats and Dingwall, there are plenty of opportunities for camping or stopping at a BNB along the way. Travellers will witness the majesty of the Scottish Highlands and the rugged beauty of the northern coast. The route also makes for an excellent cycling or motorbiking journey. We’d always recommended taking at least 5-7 days to really explore and soak up the North Coast 500.
What to see
At 516 miles long, there’s plenty to see and do and some amazing stretches of open road to experience. Stop to see Inverewe Garden at Poolewe, spot wildlife in Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve and don’t forget to drop into the Glenmorangie Distillery for a dram or visit Dumnet Head – the most northerly point on the British Mainland.
When to visit
Spring and Summer is always a popular time of the year for the NC500, but sadly, exploring the route during these seasons is out of question this year. Nevertheless, the route itself isn’t going anywhere and will still be free to explore in autumn/winter, hopefully when it’s safe to do so. During the autumn months is the prime time to see stags or highland coos roaming freely and maybe even the Northern Lights!
Whether you’re looking to experience it as a solo adventure, romantic road trip or family getaway, the North Coast 500 is sure to be a fun journey of discovery that you won’t soon forget.
