The annual men’s professional golf tournament on the European tour returns to Wentworth Club in Surrey this week, only this time in September. The course has hosted this competition since 1984, which has always usually been held in May, but has changed this year due to the US PGA Championship switching to May. This marks the fourth Rolex Series event of 2019, running from September 18th to September 22nd.
Huge crowds are expected to watch the tournament in which golfing legends from around the world will compete in the race to qualify for the 2020 European Ryder Cup team.
The pressure is on for Northern Irishman Rory McIllroy who recently won the PGA Tour Player of the Year and the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club just a few weeks ago. If McIllroy wins this year’s BMW PGA Championship he’ll leapfrog Brooks Koepka to the world’s number one. McIllroy came in second place in the tournament last year after losing the top spot to Italian, Francesco Molinari, by two strokes.
This year, 21-year-old rising star Vikton Hovland will make his European Tour debut as a professional at Wentworth. Whilst Hovland hasn’t been on the golfing scene for long, many fans are anticipating for him to be the sport’s future number one.
It’s not just golfing stars who’ll be at the tournament. Manchester United legends including Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are to make their return to the Celebrity Pro-Am, alongside their 2008 UEFA Champions-League team-mate Nemanja Vidic. Popstar Niall Horan and former Boyzone member Ronan Keating are also set to make an appearance.
