Gleneagles in Perthshire is a world-renowned golfing destination with three iconic courses: King’s Course, Queen’s Course and The PGA Centenary Course. This month, we’ve chosen to feature the iconic King’s Course as our golf course of the month.
In 1919, Scottish professional golfer, James Braid created The King’s Course at Gleneagles, becoming the first golf course to open at the resort. Braid’s plan for the course was to test the best of players’ shot-making skills across the springy moorland turf. The course made sporting history in 1921, when it played host to what was also the first international match between Britian and the USA, the event now known as the Ryder Cup.
The King’s Course is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland with sweeping views across the peaks of the Trossachs and Ben Vorlich. ‘A masterpiece of golf course design’ is the phrase that is often used to describe the course with its 18-holes, each given wonderful Scottish names, stretching for 6790 yards. The King’s Course is considered a tough track as its fairways are punishing rough and strewn with heather and gorse. It was designed to test the skills of even the best after all…
Since hosting its first even event in 1921, the King’s Course went on to host many more prestigious golfing events and still does to this very day. Throughout the late eighties to the mid-nineties, the King’s Course was famously the home of the Scottish Open. Other important events that have taken place here include the Curtis Cup, Dunhill Trophy, the WPGA Championship of Europe and the 100th edition of the Scottish PGA Championship in 2016.
