If you’re looking for an unforgettable golfing experience in Wales, Nefyn & District Golf Club on the north coast is the place to be. Nefyn & District Golf Club has continuously been voted among the top 100 golf courses in the UK, so we’ve chosen to feature this magnificent club as our golf club of the month!
It doesn’t matter whether you can pronounce its name or not, Nefyn & District Golf Club guarantees an excellent golf experience for all golfers. The course has been described by many as one of the most visually stunning courses in the UK as its situated on the sea cliffs of the peninsula overlooking Porthdinllaen bay and across the Irish Sea. Just below the spectacular 15th fairway is Porthdinllaen beach where you can find the famous Ty Coch Inn, a cozy and comfortable spot you can break away to for a pint or two after a round.
Golf was first played at Nefyn & District in 1907 supposedly after a meeting that took place at the Ty Coch pub. Originally, the course consisted of just nine-holes before being extended to 18 holes a few years later. During the 1920s and 1930s, professional golfers, J.H Taylor and James Braid were commissioned to add a further nine holes and to revise the existing course. Three more holes were added in the 1980s by F.W Hawtree and A.H.F Jiggens.
The Course today
Today, the club has 26 holes with a spectacular view of the sea from every tee – a feature that makes it unlike any other seaside course. Until recently, the course comprised of 10 outward holes and two separate inward 8 holes, the two 18-hole courses known as the Old and New. This unusual layout often confused first-time visitors, so now, there are three distinct 9-hole loops named Front, Old and New. The Old course merges the Front and Old nines to form the club’s premier configuration.
